Radio Aerials - DAB aerials Radio Aerials - DAB aerials - Aerials for radio   Radio Aerials - DAB aerials are aerials for radio transmission.  When installing a radio aerial - DAB aerial it is advisable to use a good quality and branded aerial. This will guarantee that the aerial will be of good construction and therefore better performance. Excellent signal is key to recieving the best quality radio aerial reception, a faulty radio aerial could create hissing and distortion on FM, and breakup or lose reception on DAB digital radio. It is advised to use a directional FM radio aerial - DAB aerial rather than an omnidirectional type (often called a 'halo' due to their shape). Omnidirectional aerials are most commonly fitted as they are easy to install, however there are disadvantages. Omnidirectional aerials recieve signal from all around the compass but aren't very powerful.  When comparing the two, directional radio aerials bring in more signal from the transmitter that they point at and are less likely to provide a weak signal or hissy reception.  These are strongly recommended as omnidirectional radio aerials are also more prone to gritty sounding distortion from the multipaths that are picked up.  Always ensure the aerial is correctly aligned and has the right polarisation (elements vertical or horizontal) as well as being mounted securely.  It is also advisable to choose an aerial which includes a balun matching device if you are near a main road - this will reduce any interference from passing traffic.  When mounting the aerial outdoors it needs to be as high as possible: the FM radio network in the UK is designed to be received in stereo on outdoor aerials. It is usually fitted in the loft and often powered from a Sky box through the coax cable. This amplifier is used instead of aerial splitter and the signal is amplified by a small amount to each television to help compensate for any cable loss. Indoor Television Aerial Booster - These are usually fitted at the television to boost the freeview signal or  installed close to the aerial for greater improvement of the reception quality.  They are available with two outputs to improve reception to two televisions and replace a signal splitter. Magic Eye Installations - How does it work? Magic Eye Installations, also known as Sky TV Links enable you to view your Sky channels from another room as well as change the channels on your Sky, Sky+ or Sky+HD box from another room. In order to use a Magic Eye/TV Link, you will need an aerial cable running from your Sky box to the second television. The link is a dongle that plugs into a second television and has an infrared receiver. By pointing a Sky remote at the receiver, it sends a signal down the aerial wire to a Sky box and changes the channels. Magic Eyes are available from: Maplin.co.uk Argos Grax How do i connect Magic Eye Link? At the back of your Sky box there are two aerial sockets, these are labeled RF1 Out and RF2 Out. You need to connect an aerial extension lead from your second TV into the RF2 socket. The RF 2 socket is “powered”, this makes the magic eye link work. Do not plug it into RF1 Out! Plug the other end of the extension lead into the TV Link, then plug the link into your television, finally position the small infrared pod somewhere in range of where you plan to point the remote control – most commonly next to your television.  Once the Magic Eye link is plugged in and working,  a red light will come on.   If you are using a signal amplifier / booster with a Magic Eye TV link you may have problems as the signal booster can block commands coming from the RF2 socket.  You will need a booster that supports a digital bypass. How do you decide which to choose?     Tv Wall Brackets come in various styles.  When purchasing a tv wall bracket for your television, you will need to know the correct measurements of the tv, these can be found directly from the user guide or simply by measuring it yourself.  If you decide to purchase a tv wall bracket online, it may also be a good idea to look up the manufacturer website for the details. Well known brands such as Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and LG often make user guides available to download. There are three main tv wall bracket options to choose from: Flush or Fixed - provides minimum space between the wall and the TV Tilting - enables you to angle the TV down towards the seating area for optimum viewing Extending or Dual-Pivot - ideal for TV's in corners or free movement control Each option has its strengths and weaknesses. Flush or Fixed TV Wall Brackets These tv wall brackets provide minimum space between the television and the wall, this increases the strength of the fitting and keeps the panel as close to the wall as possible. Some smaller TVs can be mounted directly onto plaster board without backing studs. However by using this tv wall bracket and space saving, it limits the cabling access. Coax Cable – which coax cable to use?

  Coax Cable...is the quality important? Coax Cable...which to use?  A small domestic installation can be severely affected by poor quality cabling. Even more so and far more expensive to repair would be if poor cables where connected to a distribution system that served a communal set up. Cables are installed from the aerial or dish down to the outlets to make the systems work.  So which to use?  CT100 - 75Ohm    Satellite TV Cable The main difference between RG59 and RG6 cable is the size of the cables themselves. Standard RG59 coax cable has a 20 AWG copper centre and RG6 coax cable has an bigger 18 AWG copper centre conductor, offering greater bandwidth with a longer distance capability. In general, RG6 is mainly used in CATV and Satellite DSS applications and RG59 is used in analog CCTV or video applications. RG6 also includes Dual or Quad Shield. It is made using foil and braided aluminum shields. All frequencies that are normally used in High Definition are usually around 37 MHz. For all lower frequencies, an RG59 with a 95% all-copper shield is made to block RFI inclusion on base band frequencies. Because RG59 does not have a foil shield, it isnt suitable for use with satellite feeds or cable feeds. RG59 has less signal reduction, or attenuation, over 100 feet. The shielding on RG59 does not work quite as well to maintain Ghtz level signals inside of the centre conductor. RG6 is better designed for maintaining the signal levels within the centre conductor. This is the reason RG6 is most commonly used for broadband CATV as well as satellite systems. Use RG6 for any Rapid Frequencies, and use RG59 for video frequencies. TV Aerials..which are best to use? How will i find out which is the best aerial for my property? TV aerials..to dertermine which aerial is best for your area,  would be based on the signal that is transmited.  High gain 4G aerials are now the most commonly used throughout homes across the Country. The recent switchover from analogue to digital TV meant a large number of homes required a new digital tv aerial installation. There are many different types of digital tv aerials. The type of aerial your property requires is dependant on your location as well as the aerials actual location and the quality of the reception in your area. Indoor aerials will not provide adequate signal for your tv's.  So...Which Aerial Should I Use? The most common digital tv aerial used throughout the UK are the YAGI aerials. These tv aerials are suitable in areas of good to moderate signal reception, however they will not work well in areas with insufficient reception cover. The majority of digital channels will be picked up within a good signal coverage area, however it will not pick all of the available channels up. High Gain TV Aerials Areas of extremely poor reception and signal coverage will require a High Gain Aerial.  These HG aerials will ensure that homes within a very poor reception area will receive at least some digital channels. It is common within these poor coverage areas to mounted HG Aerials onto a high mast to allow for clearer, unobstructed reception quality.
